Although Omar Khayyam is best known in the West as a poet and author of The Ruba’iyat, in the East he was famous as an astronomer and mathematician – and, indeed, was one of the greatest mathematicians of the Middle Ages. He was born in Persia and is thought to have died in approximately 1122.

Intensively fun, vivid and daring, this work was possible thanks to the invention of the Ruba’i – a clever formal simplification of poetry, allowing the expression of daily experiences, thoughts in a way direct and simple. In addition, a Ruba’i could easily be memorized, and as easily imitated.

The rise of the Ruba’i coincided with revulsion from lengthy and highly artificial panegyrics and narrative poems of the time. The hypocrisy and lack of genuine human understanding frequently displayed by arid scholastics and religious jurisprudents were here frequently mocked. A promising full peep on the life of an ancient Persian erudite, clever enough not to forget common life.

Embora Omar Khayyam seja mais conhecido no Ocidente como poeta e autor de “Ruba’iyat”, no Oriente é sobretudo célebre como astrónomo e matemático – e, de fato, foi um dos maiores matemáticos da Idade Média. Omar Khayyam nasceu na Pérsia e acredita-se que tenha morrido por volta de 1122.

Bastante ousada e divertida, esta obra só foi possível graças à invenção do Ruba’i – uma inteligente simplificação formal da poesia da sua época, permitindo a expressão de experiências quotidianas e pensamentos de forma directa e simples. Além disso, um Ruba’i tinha a vantagem de poder ser facilmente memorizado e transmitido.

A ascensão dos Ruba’i coincidiu com a repulsa dos longos e altamente artificiais panegíricos e poemas narrativos da altura.
